A stout mirror beast hopped her way through piles of snow; she would have looked like the mini-sized variation of her species compared to the drifts if it wasn’t for the Snipe she’d been looking for, and had just caught up to.

“Kevin, Keviiiin!” the young mirror beast called. “Wait up! I said I was coming!”

Kevin swooped in low from above the beast, taunting while flapping her four wings furiously to hover in place. “Gonna have to move faster than that if you wanna become a real member of the day guard!” And with that, the colorful snipe was off again.

Nausicaä grunted in effort as she urged her stocky legs to push her through the snow faster. Eventually she came to a clearing in the snow drifts that held several other young trolls; Kevin, Sketes, Napstablook, and Thrym. They had all gathered around something, and Kevin was squaking with excitement.

Nausicaä trotted over to the group, finding her footing much easier in the shallow snow. Wanting to know what the others were so interested in, she peeked through Napsta’s ribcage. It looked like a large, smooth rock, but it was much more colorful than any rock she’d seen before. “What is it?” the blue beast mused.

Napstablook rattled her bones, irritated that the other troll had been looking through her. It was quite rude, but seeing as she had no vocal chords, she kept her contempt to herself.

Kevin piped up as she landed on top of the round object. “I bet it’s a toy! Like a ball?” She scooted around, trying to get the thing to move; it was heavy.

“Already tried movin’ it” Sketes chimed in, his voice slow and rhythmical. He leaned back and drooped his blind eyes, trying to get them to make out the colors from the snow. “From the feel of it, could it be an egg?”

“Does that mean we can eat it?” Thrym tried in his shrill voice.

“What- no!” Kevin squawked in indignation. “We haven’t even officially decided what it actually is yet!”

“What’s an... egg?” Nausicaä asked, intense curiosity in her voice. She’d never heard of an egg before. “What does it do?”

All of the other trolls just stared at Nausicaä for a while; not all of them were even really sure themselves, and those that did know deemed it inappropriate for such a young troll to find out.

“Well?” Nausicaä pushed, wanting an answer.

“Baby trolls come from ‘em.” Sketes said with a nonchalant shrug when no one else would speak up. He prefered to avoid confrontation, and knew that the little beast wouldn’t give up until she found out the truth. The others either stared in disbelief at how easily Sketes gave up the info.

“I’m a snipe, and even I can keep my mouth shut better than you, Sketes” Kevin chimed, her chest puffed up in irritation. Sketes merely shrugged in response, leaning back until his butt was eventually planted in the snow.

“So it’s a baby!” Nausicaä exclaimed. She knew she was the baby of her family, but she’d always wanted to have someone to look out for, like how her big sister Lita did for her. “Let’s keep it!”

“So... we can’t eat it?” Thrym tried, shrill disappointment already in his voice. He was trying to keep from throwing a fit, not wanting to drive away his friends with the screeching.

Nausicaä bounded over the trolls surrounding the egg and wrapped herself protectively around the egg. “Definitely not! If it’s a baby we have to take care of it! So that it doesn’t get eaten” she glared pointedly at Thrym. The phusling shuffled uncomfortably under her look.

“Yea, but how are we gonna do that with this thing in the middle of nowhere like this?” Kevin shifted her seat on the egg, careful not to poke at it too hard with her taloned feet.

Nasuciaä paused for a good long while. If she’d had a mouth and a tongue, her tounge would’ve been poking out from between her lips while she pondered the ideas rumbling around in her head. “We need to move it.”

“Tried that” Sketes commented.

“Didn’t work” Thrym chimed in, thinking he was being helpful.

“Uhg, I know, but that was just Sketes.” Nausicaä looked at the gimmie’er. “And no offense, but you don’t really try too hard at anything.”

“None taken” Sketes said, and meant it.

“We’re gonna have to work together!” Nausicaä exclaimed as she hopped up. “Now, lemme explain what we gotta do...”

--

Back at the center of camp, a mess of snow suddenly flurried up and out from the deepest snow pile around. Galahad, the group’s cuckoo, just so happened to be sitting nearby when this happened; it was how everyone found out.

“THE SKY IS FALLING, I TOLD YOU THIS WOULD HAPPEN” the red cuckoo shouted as he bobbed and wove through the camp, squawking at full volume. Most ignored him and went about their business. “THE FIERY FLYING BEASTS ARE COMING FOR US ALL! TAKE COVER WHILE YOU STILL CA--”

He was cut short by the long, strong, teal arm of a greater common troll that shot up in front of his face. Being unable to stop in time, Galahad ran into Sloane’s arm and was promptly knocked out. “‘Nd that settles that” she grumbled to herself before carrying on with her business.

“What-- what is the meaning of this ruckus?!” Aeneas popped her head up from her latest project; she was trying to get the group’s first shelter up, but nothing was going quite to plan and the bobo was irritated.

Sloane stuck an uninterested thumb in the flattened cuckoo’s direction. Aeneas’ feathers immediately puffed up in indignation, the little face on her snakey tail frowning. “And what’s the meaning of-- of this?!” she huffed.

Sloane shrugged. “Dunno. ‘E just went berserk all of a sudden, so I shut ‘im up” she glanced threateningly over at the little yellow bobo. “Got a problem with that?”

Aeneas’s feathers repuffed, and she tried desperately to flatten them out with her stubby wings to seem collected. “Well-- I never--” she mumbled as she tried to drag the cuckoo away from the menacing great common troll's glare.

Sloane’s face relaxed as her eyebrows arched in disinterest, and she turned away. “‘S what I thought.”

“Hmph” was all that Aeneas dared in response. Once she’d gotten Galahad over to her little building project, she tried to wake him up. Gex and Icee looked on for a few moments, but decided to keep out of the matter. When light taps to Galahad’s face didn’t wake hi mup, Aeneas impatiently took a wing full of snow and dumped it on Galahad’s face. The frazzled bird quickly sputtered back to life.

“THE SKY IS--” Aeneas slapped more snow into Galahad’s face; it disoriented him, getting a moment’s silence.

“I know” Aeneas said sharply. She tried collecting herself again, to seem calm. “Now, breathe, stop squawking, use your inside voice, and tell me what happened.”

Galahad looked around nervously for a few seconds before peering around the pile of snow they were behind to peer at another, unassuming pile of snow that something had landed in earlier. “Over there” he pointed while whispering suspiciously. “It landed right over there!”

Aeneas gave the cuckoo an exasperated sigh before taking his wing in hers and began dragging Galahad to where he’d pointed. “Over there doesn’t help much”

“No, no, no, NO DON’T TAKE ME OVER TH-” was responded to by another faceful of snow from Aeneas.

“Shut your mouth!” Aeneas galnced at Sloane, hoping she wouldn't get agitated and turn her attention back to the two smaller trolls. “Just-- uhg” Aeneas held her head in disbelief that she was really investigating something on this loon’s behalf. “Is it this one?” She gestured at the drift of snow they’d just arrived at.

“Yes!” Galahad quickly answered, nodding vigorously. He paused. “B-but, don’t go up there!” He leaned in real close to Aeneas and whispered. “If you touch them sky bits, the sky monster might get angry and come to roast us all!” he leaned back and nodded, seeming sure of himself.

Aeneas gave Galahad an peeved, flat glare. “Right” she said before working her way up the snow drift. It was quite difficult, seeing as her stumpy wings couldn't really grip anything that well.

To her surprise, she actually found something when at the top; a small egg, steaming with heat. How in the world had it gotten there? Aeneas carefully picked it up; it was still warm, having melted a little hole in the middle of the snow drift.

Sliding down, she clutched the egg tightly to her body; it’s warmth was comforting, even if it was fading. Galahad jumped back at the sight of the thing. “That’s the sky bit!”

Aeneas touched her wingtip to her head again in exasperation; hadn't anyone ever bothered to tell this loon anything about the real world? Or was he so stuck in his delusion that he just couldn't tell real from imaginary?  “It’s an egg” Aeneas said as she held the thing up for Galahad to see.

Galahad swiped at the thing and made some sort of chortle that conveyed disgust; Aeneas had to flounder to keep the thing from falling to the ground. “What the-- hey!” she said as she gripped the little egg defensively. “Stop that!”

Galahad gave Aeneas a hard look. “You been possessed by the sky monster?”

Aeneas let out a long groan. “UHG-- no!” she shook her head as she began walking away, the egg tucked under her wing. She wasn’t going to let the group loon hurt this little thing; she’d have to get it a place by the fire under Okami’s supervision. Or, she at least hoped the mirror beast would be nice enough to help her look after the egg. She wasn’t really sure what to think of him, since he never spoke.

“Bu-- you-- you can’t keep that in the camp!” Galahad said, desperately falling over himself to catch up with the bobo.

“Watch me” she quipped back before marching off towards the firepit.
